Short Pump Family Dentistry is proud to offer oral surgery options to our patients. There are a variety of reasons that you may need oral surgery to help correct or promote your overall dental well-being.

  • Gum Grafting
  • Crown Lengthening
  • Ridge Augmentation
  • Dental Bone Grafting
  • Dental Implant Placement

If we feel you are a candidate for oral surgery, Richmond dentist Dr. Tse will go over the options and reason for it with each patient in easily understandable language. After the surgery, detailed instructions will be given to each patient for their aftercare, along with any necessary pain medication or antibiotics.

Natural teeth are ideal for biting, chewing and maintaining mouth and jawbone structure, which is why a dentist’s first priority is to help restore, save and repair your natural teeth. Dr. Tse and his team may find out that one or many of your teeth are in need of extraction, and this can happen for a variety of reasons. These can include teeth that are poorly positioned in the mouth (also called impacted teeth), teeth being broken and unrepairable, teeth that are decayed, teeth that have advanced periodontal disease, or as preparation for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Tse will make sure you’re comfortable before, during, and after your extraction procedure. This includes walking you through every step of the tooth extraction, as well as the use of local anesthetics.

During any tooth extraction, Dr. Tse will numb your teeth, jawbone, and the surrounding gums with an anesthetic so that there may be a sensation of pressure, but no pain. As always, we will make sure to send you home with detailed post-operative instructions, along with the necessary pain prescriptions.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Extraction of wisdom teeth can be necessary to help avoid future dental health issues, or in some cases to correct a current oral health problem. Problems associated with wisdom teeth are usually due to lack of room for the teeth to erupt or poke through the gums and be appropriately cleaned of food or bacteria.

If wisdom teeth do not fully emerge, they can remain impacted below the gum line. Serious health issues can begin to emerge when you have impacted teeth like cysts, infections, and damage to the underlying bone structure or even surrounding teeth. Patients can avoid these problems by getting their wisdom teeth removed in a timely manner so that they can have happy, healthy gums and teeth for many years.

Implant Surgery

A dental implant may be needed to give our patients a long-lasting tooth replacement option. For dental implants, a small screw-shaped titanium post is put in place to replace the root of the missing tooth in the jawbone. Implant surgery is minor, usually requiring only local anesthesia.

After a period of healing, the implant will fuse to the jawbone around it. The implant is then capped with a custom crown that is made to look like your existing teeth. Dental implants are one of the most documented successful replacement options with an over 95% success rate.
